KLP Eiendom (KLP Properties) is choosing thermal energy storage
KLP Eiendom is installing Cartesian’s Thermal Box in one of its larger office buildings in Trondheim, storing heat at night to cut peak loads on the coldest days.

Can heat be stored at night and used during the day, while saving both money and emissions? KLP Eiendom believes so. The property company has installed a thermal storage system from Cartesian in one of its larger office buildings in Trondheim.
Shifting energy use away from the peaks
The Thermal Box charges at night, when there is less strain on the grid, and releases the energy during the day, when the offices requires more heating. The aim is to reduce peak loads on both electricity and district heating, especially on cold winter days, and to give heat pumps more stable operating conditions.
KLP Eiendom presents the technology as Norwegian technology with roots in SINTEF research. Cartesian has previously delivered cold storage to a large retail store in the south of Norway and a heat storage system in France.
Expected savings and earlier results
The project has support from Enova (Norwegian state-owned funding). KLP Eiendom aims to save around NOK 120,000 a year in energy and capacity costs, and will collect data to document the results. According to the article, experience from earlier installations shows that the solution can deliver 30% lower capacity demand, 20% lower energy costs and 10% higher heating system efficiency. KLP Eiendom also describes the project as part of its sustainability strategy.
