Keeping hot water circulating at Solstrand with thermal storage

Ahead of VVS-dagene, Nemitek visits Solstrand Hotel & Bad to explore how Cartesian's Thermal Box supports hot-water circulation alongside a CO₂ heat pump.

Hot-water circulation needs heat even when guests are not drawing water. At Solstrand Hotel & Bad near Bergen, that demand is now supported by a Thermal Box connected to the hotel's CO₂ heat-pump system.

Stored heat between heat-pump cycles

Nemitek reports that the store charges to 65°C while the heat pump produces domestic hot water. When the heat pump stops, stored heat keeps the circulation loop warm. This addresses a particular challenge for CO₂ heat pumps: circulation returns are warmer than the low return temperatures these systems need for efficient operation.

The Solstrand store holds 75 kWh. Its phase change material absorbs heat as it melts and releases it as it solidifies, providing compact storage in the plant room.

Cartesian will exhibit at NOVA Spektrum in Lillestrøm on 14–16 October 2026, with presentations on all three days. The Solstrand solution and cooling-capacity challenges are among the topics. Read Nemitek's report below for the full case.
